With Us

This week I spoke with a man who expressed some doubts about his beliefs, especially during the Christmas season and you may have a few questions this Christmas as well. Why is there pain for some?  Why are some of us lonely?  Why are some relationships broken?

I am convinced when we face the absolutely most important questions of life, we have Someone to turn to today because He is with us.

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
(Isaiah 7:14)

In Matthew’s writing, we are reminded that Immanuel means “God with us”.

God with Us

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

And today He is still with us.  The writer of Hebrews tells us –

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:14-16)

I believe this passage speaks more than simply the temptations we face.  He was and is aware of all of our weaknesses. Jesus literally put on flesh and walked with human beings, experiencing the same kinds of pain, weariness, loss, and temptation.  He knows and has compassion on us.

God’s Word reveals a Savior who is with us and we can lean into that truth today.
