Read: 1 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Reflect:
How would you describe freedom? Some would say that freedom is “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.”
Is this really freedom?
This week I spoke with a man who told me of his nephew who has a problem with alcohol. The nephew says he drinks because he is of legal age and free to drink as much as he wants as often as he wants. He proclaims his “freedom”, but in the end, he is an alcoholic like his father.
As we’ve read this week, the world has a problem – sin. That problem finds its way into every aspect of our world and our lives. Sometimes our “freedom” causes some very real pain to the people who love us most. God is at the top of this list.
He wants to set us truly free.
John recorded the words of Jesus when he said, “if the Son has set you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8: 36
Freedom from sin. Freedom from spiritual death. Freedom from condemnation. Freedom from self-deception. Freedom to make the right choices.
Look at the contrast Jesus gives us in John 10:10 –
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
Respond:
Take a little time to consider the verses above today. Wheat does the abundant life look like? What does it mean to be free? Embrace the freedom Christ wants us to live in right now.
