Understanding and Acting

1 Chronicles 12:32

And the children of Issachar, who were men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do…

Do we understand the times we’re living in?

Jesus addressed the topic with some of the people of his day –

Then Jesus said to the people, “When you see clouds growing bigger in the west, you say, ‘A rainstorm is coming.’ And soon it begins to rain. When you feel the wind begin to blow from the south, you say, ‘It will be a hot day.’ And you are right. You hypocrites! You can understand the weather. Why don’t you understand what is happening now?

Most of us can read the signs of the weather, but how many of us are like the descendants of Issachar? Scripture tells us they not only understood, but they also knew how to respond.

Making a difference for God will be uncomfortable in some ways, but maintaining the status quo for another six months may be even more frustrating. Chip Ingram once observed “the public arena is a very loud place” and it is often less than friendly to a view that points others to Christ.

Still God is looking for each of us to take a step of faith. It may be as small as identifying yourself as a follower of Christ in the workplace by taking a stand. Understanding is one thing. Acting on our convictions is something else altogether.
