Grace that Reconciles

For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.

Galatians 3:26-29

As we think about our responsibilities to restore other followers of Christ who have fallen, it is worth remembering the work of Christ in our own lives.

Paul’s words earlier in Galatians describe the unity we have as each one of us is only justified by Christ. No one is more “saved” than the other.

Specifically, Galatians 3: 28 gives us three broad categories of how Grace reconciles us.

  • The cultural barrier – “Jew nor Greek” Racial divisions or cultural divisions or even age divisions have no place in the church.
  • The class barrier – “slave nor free” At the foot of the cross, every man is equal. There is no socioeconomic differences. Those that distinguish according to social standing or wealth are in error. James also reminds us, “to show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ” (James 2:1)
  • The gender barrier – “male nor female” It goes without saying that men and women are different, but the context of Paul’s words here tell us that when it comes to salvation all men and women are equally justified by faith in Christ

So, let’s keep in mind just how much grace we have received as we approach someone in need and “restore him in a spirit of gentleness” (Galatians 6:1b).
