Bound up in our own drama?

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

Romans 8: 5-6

Some time ago I listened to a woman as she expressed her anger and bitterness. Her focus on her personal situation is driving a wedge between those she loves the most.  As I thought about her rage, I located this anonymous quote I tucked away several years ago:

“Sometimes we can’t get our minds off ourselves and our own dilemmas. But living in the spotlight (especially when we’re the ones shining it) brings immense pressure. When we’re bound up in our own drama, we aren’t drawing near to God.”

The idea of being self-centered can be a problem for each of us. I know it can be true in my life. In the passage above, Paul contrasts the person who is consumed with himself with the one whose life is focused on the Spirit. One ultimately leads to death, the other to life and peace.

Theologian Gordon Fee refers to the Holy Spirit as God’s Empowering Presence.  What kind of week has it been so far? Self-centered or have the days been centered on God’s Empowering Presence?
