“Expect great things; attempt great things.” – William Carey
William Carey is remembered as the “Father of Modern Day Missions” due to his sermons and his work in India from the late 1700s into the nineteenth century.
He took the words from Romans quite literally:
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Romans 10:13-15
How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
With each question, Paul builds his case for the importance of sharing the Gospel with others. Yet when William Carey shared his vision to reach the lost around the world, it was reported that he met some resistance from some church leaders who responded with, “Young man, sit down! You are an enthusiast. When God pleases to convert the heathen, he’ll do it without consulting you or me.”
Thankfully, William Carey and countless others dismissed that kind of thinking because God has actually called each of us to tell others about Christ. Some of us can speak with people here in our communities and we can also help send others to reach those who have still not heard the good news.
