A very present help

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,

Psalm 46:1-2

Earlier this week I came across the following verse that begins to conclude the Psalm listed above, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Pslams 46:10).

I once spoke with a doctor who expressed his frustration in being able to help only a few people when so many are in need. He felt powerless and the truth is that we lack the power to meet all the needs around us, but instead of falling back into a sense of hopelessness, we who follow Christ should lean on the God who is “a very present help in trouble.”

Think about that phrase for a moment. He is absolutely aware of my trouble. He is present and engaged. He is more than willing to help. The beginning verses of Pslam 46 above, remind me why I should just be still and trust in God in all things. When I trust in Him there is no fear, even if the world around me is falling apart.

As this day begins, let me take the time to remember and focus on the Lord who is our strength and let Him be in his proper position in my life all day long.
