When I saw him, I fell at his feet as if I were dead. But he laid his right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid! I am the First and the Last. I am the living one. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.
Revelation 1:17-18
How will I respond when I am in the presence of God? Several years ago a song called “I Can Only Imagine” posed the question in the following lyrics –
Surrounded by Your glory
What will my heart feel?
Will I dance for You, Jesus
Or in awe of You be still?
Will I stand in Your presence
Or to my knees will I fall?
Will I sing hallelujah?
Will I be able to speak at all?
I am pretty sure, my response will be closer to John’s in the verses above rather than the sight of me dancing. John who was present at the transfiguration of Jesus (Matthew 17) and literally walked this earth with Jesus during his ministry described this encounter with Jesus this way –
When I turned to see who was speaking to me, I saw seven gold lampstands. And standing in the middle of the lampstands was someone like the Son of Man. He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest. His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire. His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves. He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was like the sun in all its brilliance.
Revelation 1:12-16
As we’ve read this week in the example of Isaiah and now John, God’s presence elicits a response and it seems to me that a proper recognition revolves around the idea of reverence for God. Think of how you will respond on that day.
