Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12: 1-3

Do you know someone you would describe as immature for their age? I can think of a couple of people I’ve known over the years who were apparently resistant to assuming the responsibilities of adulthood.

Paul’s letter to the Corinthians returns again and again to idea of maturity or growing up in the Faith.

In the passage above, Paul is just beginning the discussion of Spiritual Gifts. The people in Corinth had a history of false religions and he wants to make sure that Christ is the foundation of any spiritual gifts at work in the church.

What if someone claims to have a gift of spiritual truth but their words undermine Scripture? In effect, according to Paul, they are cursing Christ!
