But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
2 Timothy 3:1-5
Today, I spoke to a Healthcare provider, who described a scene when one of her patients literally threw a temper tantrum on the floor in the middle of an emergency room much like a toddler might do. He is 19 years old. Thankfully, she reminded him that this is not appropriate behavior for an adult.
As I read through the list in the passage above, the first thing I noticed is that it is apparent we are also in difficult times just as in the first century. Second, many of those descriptive words apply to many of us in the West at the very least, but one word stuck out more than the others this time as I read Paul’s inspired words – unappeasable.
So many are dissatisfied with their lives and since they search for satisfaction outside of faith in Christ, the will remain unappeasable. And so they fulfill many of the other phrases above. They mistreat their parents. They are brutal and heartless to other human beings. They lack self-control and they are reckless.
This passage is a warning for us as we recognize the times we are living in so we should not be surprised but instead, we should be leaning all the more on the hope and truth found in Scripture no matter what.
