Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.
James 4:13-14
Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve noticed morning fog as I drove around the city and so it’s easy to understand the word picture above. The morning fog may make a little impact on driving, but by noon it is soon forgotten. Even if we live a long life on this earth, our time is brief and so we should heed the words in the next verse –
What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil.
James 4:15-16
The problem with pretentious plans is found in ignoring or dismissing God’s plan for our lives. The time we have is short, shouldn’t we deepen our reliance on God? We should value our time and make the most of every day because each day could be our last.
