Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20
On Sunday, the pastor referenced the verse above as he introduced his sermon and as I think about what it means to care for one another, is anything more important than doing our part to fulfill the Great Commission?
The Great Commission is more than preaching the Good News to the people. Jesus’ directive is to create disciples, baptize those disciples, and teach “them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
Paul’s instruction to Timothy gives us more detail – “preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2).
The writer of Hebrews provided this kind of instruction – “But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin”(Hebrews 3:13).
Each of us is in continual need of discipleship. Here’s a couple of questions to consider. Who are those who are building up your faith today? Who are you helping deepen their faith?
