Those to follow, those to ignore.

Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.

Hebrews 13:7

Over the years I’ve benefited from the teaching and writing of a number of teachers in both formal and informal settings, but those I value most are those who have lived a consistent (not perfect) life. The writer of Hebrews reminds us to consider not just the “what” the leaders of the faith teach, but also reflect on how they live their lives. When they live faithfully to the words they speak, we can feel confident in following their footsteps.

On the other hand, Jesus reminded us that false teachers shouldn’t be followed at all – “ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch (Matthew 15:14).”

Finally, the verse that follows also serves as a reminder that even if human leaders eventually disappoint (and sometimes they do), if we keep our focus on Christ we will find that He is holy and just and loving and forgiving. Perfectly. All the time.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Hebrews 13:8

If this is true (and it is) what difference does it make in your life?
