Blessed are you who hunger now,
Luke 6:22
for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
Just as the verse we considered yesterday didn’t consider physical circumstances, being hungry isn’t necessary for entry into the kingdom of God, but there is something to say about our appetites, don’t you think?
You have only so much capacity for appetites. If you fill yourself with entertainment or politics or anything else, there will be little left for the spiritual person inside you, but if you are hungry for the things of God, you will certainly be filled.
Secondly, Jesus tells those who weep now will have the last laugh in the end. Again, this doesn’t mean that sorrow in itself helps you earn a spot in God’s kingdom. I am reminded of the contrast James makes –
Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
James 4:9-10
And the Psalmist tells us that those who seek the Lord –
Weeping may last through the night,
Psalm 30:5b
but joy comes with the morning.
Consider these two questions today. What appetites are you filling? What breaks your heart?
