A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.
Luke 6:40
Some things never change. Today I spent the day with a few hundred other pharmaceutical reps receiving some additional training and it was a lot like my initial training at Bristol Myers Squibb more than thirty years ago as we spent much of the day role-playing or practicing our messaging for health care professionals, because we are never really fully trained.
There is always something new to learn and this is especially true when considering our faith in Christ. In the verse above, Jesus describes the essential part of discipleship in that when we are fully trained we will certainly not be greater than Christ, but we should be a reflection of His teachings to everyone in the world around us.
Today we are somewhat dependent on faithful teachers who help us learn and apply God’s Word to our lives and I am reminded again of Paul’s bold statement to the church at Corinth: “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1).
On the other hand, there are those who will lead us in the wrong direction, even with the best intentions. Jesus told this parable just before the statement above –
He also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit?
Luke 6:39
The good teacher remains faithful to the Biblical text. The blind teacher abandons Scripture in favor of something else.
