Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
Luke 12: 22-24
Anxiety has been and is a real challenge in life. How many of us worry about our lives, our economic situation, our health, providing for our family? How many of us have anxiety about the spiritual condition of those we love?
After telling the parable of the rich man, Jesus reminds His followers of two things in the passage above.
- Life is more than our anxieties – the ravens of the earth don’t sow or reap, they don’t have bank accounts, yet “God feeds them.”
- How much more valuable you are! God provides for the ravens and the other living things around us, yet God values us as His highest creation.
- Your life should be one of faith since all the worrying cannot add a single hour of life.
Jesus recognized the anxiety of human beings and reminds us the answer is a life of faith and dependence in the God who truly cares for us. It’s a good reminder to me and a challenge to live out in my life.
