The promise of perfect peace

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
    there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
    and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
    with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
    will accomplish this.

Isaiah 9: 5-7

Christmas is the time when celebrate the birth of Christ and the promised life, death, and resurrection providing redemption for people just like us, but it is also a time of celebration as we gather with family and friends, exchange gifts, and spend time with each other. But, not everyone shares the experience.

Peace sometimes seems elusive. Today I spoke with a friend who sees several patients who struggle with loneliness and despair during the holiday season and later in the day, I met with another who is facing a very different Christmas season this year.

As so while we may sing of “peace on earth”, peace in our hearts may seem a little more elusive. My primary remembrance of the verse below comes from a song by Andrae Crouch. I’ve heard it thousands of times and its message reminds me of the importance of looking beyond my circumstances.

You will keep in perfect peace
    all who trust in you,
all whose thoughts are fixed on you!

Isaiah 26:3
