See the Big Picture

To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One.
Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these?
He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name,
by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing.

Isaiah 40:25-26

I have a series of photographic lenses I use for various projects. Some feature extremely wide angles and others provide a very narrow field of view. While zoom lenses can be very helpful in isolating a subject, looking only through a zoom lens intentionally limits our ability to see the big picture.

When we consider our approach to how we see God, I wonder if we tend to limit our expectations of God.

“The God of the evangelical church is so small that we can put Him in our pocket.”

A.W. Tozer

In short, left to ourselves, we tend to reduce God to manageable terms. Why? I think we like to maintain control of our world and a God in our pocket is more comfortable. We prefer a God of our own making, even if we won’t admit it.

Want to avoid tunnel vision and expand your view of God, maybe we can follow the lead of Isaiah and look up and take in the stars in the sky. If God is responsible for this world and the worlds beyond, is there anything that limits His ability to act in our lives?
