So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things. For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
2 Peter 1:12-16
Later this week, Patrina and I will fly out to Phoenix to spend the Easter weekend with Jacque and her boys and we are looking forward to seeing them all again, especially at the most meaningful time on the Christian calendar.
As I read the passage above earlier today, the content of Peter’s message resonated with me. He wrote this letter knowing that his time on earth was short, “because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things (2 Peter 1:14-15).”
I’m certainly planning on being around for a couple of decades or more, but we are also aware that even a long life is relatively short, don’t you agree?
Knowing that his time was limited, Peter wanted to make sure the Truth of the Gospel was found in those who would follow even after his departure. That’s the kind of legacy I think we all want to leave for those who follow and it is founded in the truth we celebrate in the power of Christ’s resurrection.
At the end of our lives, will anything else really matter?
