Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
Hebrews 1:1-4
This morning, Patrina and I attended church with some friends where the service closed with a song paraphrasing the verses above. It’s important to retain our focus on Christ, isn’t it?
The ESV Study Bible summarizes the book of Hebrews this way – Christ is greater than any angel, priest, or old covenant institution; thus each reader, rather than leaving such a great salvation, is summoned to hold on by faith to the true rest found in Christ and to encourage others in the church to persevere.
In the opening verses of Hebrews, the writer begins to make his case that Jesus is better or superior in every way.
When a prophet communicated the word of God he related what God was saying to his people. John 1:1 tells us that Jesus is the Word of God. There is no middle-man.
Angels are impressively created beings, but Jesus is “much superior”.
Jesus never began a sermon or a conversation with “And God told me….” As a communicator He is without rival because He is the Word.
That’s why the people responded in Matthew 7: 28-29 –
And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
