Deeper than the superficial

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Jeremiah 31:32-32

Every day I spend time with several people I don’t know very well. I know a few things that help me relate to them. I remember names and a few life events, but my knowledge of most of the people I talk with daily is pretty superficial.

It is all too easy to approach God in the same way, yet God wants us to know Him. Not know about Him or have some kind of second-hand information. He doesn’t want to be known just by the great people, the theologians, or the elite. He wants to be known by the least of us, by those of us who don’t quite measure up.

In Hebrews 8: 8-12 the writer quotes from Jeremiah 31: 31-34 as he describes the better covenant He offers through Christ and we can “Know the LORD”.

Look at the benefits: God writes His word on our hearts. He is our God and we are His people. He forgives our iniquity. He forgets our sins. He wants us to know Him.

How would you describe your relationship with God today? Are you willing to go to the next level? Deeper?
