The danger of holding on to unforgiveness

See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;

Hebrews 12:15

This afternoon I had a brief discussion about a difficult topic with a friend of mine. We talked of how to bridge the divide between two people who are at odds with one another. Relationships are hard, aren’t they?

When discussing the Christian Life we often talk about how God transforms us from the inside out, but the writer of Hebrews warns us about a not-so-positive change that also springs up from the inside as well.

The “root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled.”

How does bitterness pop up to the surface? It seems to be a process where we hold on to hurt and are unwilling to forgive. The unforgiveness leads to isolation and it only gets worse from there, doesn’t it?

When the root of bitterness springs up it creates nothing but havoc and like an untreated contagious infection, it spreads and spreads and sickens others.

How do we avoid bitterness? Look back at verses 14 and 15.

Strive for peace with everyone and for holiness….see it that no fails to obtain the grace of God….

This passage reminded me of Jesus’ words, “For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Matthew 6:14-16

Forgiveness is difficult but absolutely necessary. Is there someone you are feeling bitter toward today?
