Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say,
“The Lord is my helper;
I will not fear;
what can man do to me?”
Yes, I am writing about the same passage (above) again today. It reminds me of some of Paul’s writings in the twelfth chapter of Romans although it provides a bit more detail.
Love and hospitality are core values of the Christian faith. Jesus told us that we would be known by how we love one another – not just by words, but by how we actually live. Showing hospitality to strangers, prisoners, and those “who are mistreated” are practical examples of what it means to love one another.
Hold marriage in honor. During a time when marriage is being undermined in our society, holding on to Biblical marriage will make a difference in the world. How? Keeping “the marriage bed undefiled” speaks to two things in the passage above. Sexual immorality includes any act outside of the fidelity of commitment between a man and wife. Adultery is not a sin to be winked at even when the culture and many in the church appear to have looked the other way.
Live Free from the Love of Money. How? Be content with what you have. I am reminded of Paul’s words to the Philippians –
I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:12-13
These three steps help us demonstrate our love God above all as we remember the promise that we will never be abandoned and so why would we be afraid of men or circumstances of life?
