“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh;
Joel 2:28-29, 32
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit…And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.
Today, we celebrate the day our founders proclaimed Independence from Great Britain. Many of us will have special gatherings, enjoy a good meal, and watch some fireworks as we think about the freedoms we all should cherish.
For the follower of Christ, true freedom is not found in independence, but in dependence upon Christ and His promises.
Peter quoted the passage above in his first sermon preached on the day of Pentecost. On that day more than 3000 people celebrated their freedom through baptism.
It’s encouraging to remember that last verse I included in Joel –
“And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”
May each of us and our families experience true freedom in Christ.
