“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5: 14-16

You’ve heard the phrase “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”, right? If you have adult children you will, at some time or another, take note of some of the traits you have passed on. Many of the characteristics I see in my kids are positive, but then there are those that I must acknowledge as originating with me that I regretfully passed on to my children. We take the good with the bad as the apple doesn’t fall very far from the tree, right?

Not so with our heavenly Father because there is nothing in His character that is flawed. As the passage above states, when we reflect His light into our world, people will see how our character mirrors of Father. Then they will see our actions and give Him honor.

Take a few minutes today to examine your own character. How accurately are we reflecting our Father’s character? When was the last time someone commented on your “good deeds” and glorified our Father in heaven?
