By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.

Hebrews 11:8

A week and a half ago, Patrina and I set off on a journey to places we had never visited before. We had a general idea and plan, but each day brought a new experience for us. Still, at the end of a long plane ride home, we got into our car and pulled into our familiar driveway to the comfort of home.

Not so for Abraham. I am sure Abraham’s decision to leave all he knew for a great adventure promised by God was less carefree and yet was even more intriguing because at the center of it all was Abraham’s complete trust in God.

James reminds us that “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God.” Not only was Abraham able to trust God, but the feeling was mutual.

Few of us have followed a call like Abraham’s to venture into the truly unknown, but even when we have our days, weeks, and lives planned out, what is unknown or unexpected sneaks up on us.

The Chinese philosopher, Laozi, stated that “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” It’s a simple truth, but one that Abraham certainly followed four thousand years ago.

So, today, we can also make a step toward obedience and discover what God has planned for us. Adventure is waiting.
