But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23
How do we respond under pressure? We live in a world today where the differences between people are accelerating and generally taking on a darker mood in many instances.
We can’t necessarily change our circumstances, but our responses can make a difference.
Paul provided timely advice for Titus in the first century that applies to us today when he instructed Titus to “remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people” (Titus 3:1-2).
- Be submissive and obey rulers and authorities – Our society is dependent on following the law and no one person should be able to say the rules don’t apply to me. How much more for those of us who claim to follow Christ?
- Be ready for every good work – Every day we have opportunities to do and say good things that encourage others.
- Speak evil of no one and be courteous toward all people – Maybe no point is more instructive to us today. In a world filled with people shouting over each other on the streets and in television studios, may we be known for our kindness and goodness.
I get infuriated as much as the guy next door when faced with the turmoil we are seeing today, but I can’t snap my fingers and make the chaos disappear, I am called to participate in the process described in Galatians 5:22-23.
Let’s start this week as people bearing the fruit of the Spirit.
