Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light.

Ephesians 5: 11-14a

A few weeks ago, I read an article by a fairly well-known humanist who commented that “Light spreads into darkness, not the other way around.”

She doesn’t know it, but she is echoing the inspired words of Paul in the verses above.

As followers of Christ, we are called to turn away from darkness and instead of participating, we are to expose them. Light exposes what is hidden and there is no place to hide.

Now, we may feel that darkness is creeping into our world more and more, but there is a solution – Light. So Paul concludes verse 14 by echoing the words of Isaiah –

Therefore it says,
“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

Ephesians 5:14b

How do we expose the works of darkness then? First, wake up! Look at the world around us and let’s see how we can be an influence for good. And then as in yesterday’s verses, we are to focus on what is “good and right and true.”
