Love and Respect

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Ephesians 5:31-33

In her book, Five Lies of Our Anti-Christian Age, Rosaria Butterfield addresses the battle we face –

“There is a war raging between good and evil in our world, and though we might prefer the conflict to be fought somewhere else, we don’t get to pick the times in which we live. The front lines today are battles over sex, gender, and identity. We must be ready for a fight in precisely these places. Don’t underestimate the power of your opponent. The devil wants us to join him in his rebellion against God. He wants to make us cowards and traitors. He wants us to believe the myth of our own autonomy. He wants us to raise the white flag and side with the enemy—the enemy without or the enemy within, it doesn’t matter to him.”

Rosaria Champagne Butterfield, Five Lies of Our Anti-Christian Age

Today the idea of family is constantly being undermined, but no matter what continent you live on, the family unit has been the foundation of civilization for as long as man and woman have walked this earth.

In the passage above, Paul is addressing the responsibility of how Christian families should function and in his instruction he refers back to the book of beginnings, Genesis. God’s word is always consistent and reliable. After all, He created the idea of marriage as it functions to assist our lives, but the idea of marriage also represents the love Christ has for those who believe and follow Him. So when a Christian husband and wife love and respect each other, it represents the kind of relationship designed and endorsed by God.

Have you views on marriage and family shifted with the shifting culture? Let’s think about what God has to say about families.
