Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust.
Psalm 143:8
Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.
Whether it is true or not, it has often been said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But how many of us actually take time for breakfast on a regular basis?
What about our schedule and time with God? How many of us may say, “There’s no way I can create some space for God in the morning, I have too much to do.”Now, we’re not likely to actually say this out loud in the presence of others, but doesn’t it sound a little familiar?
The Psalmist reminds us to take note of the steadfast love of the Lord (early) in the morning.
- He begin his day by acknowledging the One he trusted in all things.
- He asked for moral clarity as he continued through his day as he offered himself as a type of living sacrifice before God.
It’s worth noting that Mark’s Gospel tells us that Jesus set an example for His disciples and for us: “And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed”(Mark 1:35).
The goal of this thought is to challenge our status quo, not create a guilty feeling so early in the morning. The psalmist and Jesus recognized their need to begin the day with God, so they did what was necessary because they wanted to spend time with God. God wants to spend time with us, too.
