In that day

In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.

Isaiah 11:10

On Friday I listened as a friend spoke excitedly about the Day of the LORD. Many of the prophets in the Old Testament looked forward to the day when God would put everything right. In the New Testament, Jesus spoke about the Kingdom and John described in Revelation the reign of Christ.

A quick search on my Bible app for “The Day of LORD” revealed 344 instances of the phrase. Today, I think most of us think of the Day of the LORD as the day we will transition from this life to eternal life and that is true because “it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment”(Hebrews 9:27), but everything will change for everyone on “that day.”

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.”

Revelation 21:3-5

In the eleventh chapter of Isaiah, the prophet paints a picture of the ideal world where Jesus will rule and reign, and then, in the twelfth chapter, he begins with the same phrase, “In that day” and describes the response of the righteous. We’ll begin examining that response tomorrow.
