Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.
Ephesians 4:25
Interestingly, Paul’s first step in describing the life of a follower of Christ in this letter to the Ephesians centers on telling the truth.
“Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.” – Albert Einstein
Einstein reminds us of the importance of valuing the truth. Think about the impact of a lie someone has told you. What damage did the lie do to your relationship?
So, I think we can agree that telling (and living) the truth can be a game changer in terms of impacting those around us. In the verses above, Paul reminds the Ephesians that since Jesus is the Truth, living a truthful life should be central to our character.
Do the people closest to you trust your word? Are you careless with the truth? Paul is careful to give us clear direction regarding how we should live our lives honoring God in the passage above.
- Put off the old self including your deceitful desires and put on the new self by renewing our minds.
- Put away falsehood and speak truthfully to those around us because we are family.
Take a moment and think about your relationships and the truth. Is there a difference at home and at work or at church? Can you “be trusted with important matters?”
