Heard any High-Sounding Nonsense Lately?

Read: Colossians 2:8

Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.

Reflect:

Empty philosophies, rationalization, and general false teachings were a reality for the Colossians just as they are for us today. The goal is the same: to undermine the authority of Christ and Scripture and then to weaken and destroy the individual and the Church.

Last week, a friend mentioned to me that the root of the problem on the inside of faith is found when leaders in the church turn away from the authority of God’s word. They find a new teaching, a new spin. In our world, we face an onslaught of false teaching and ideas that have crept into the church and compromise the faith of many.

Paul discusses several areas of false teaching in Colossians 2. We’ll follow his example of confronting this kind of teaching and thinking that leads people away from faith in Christ alone. No matter how reasonable and “fine-sounding” the arguments are to our ears, we must keep our focus on the “…mystery of God, namely Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2: 2-3).

Respond:

Paul’s advice to the Colossians still applies for us today – know Christ and the power of the Gospel. Avoid anyone who would minimize the Gospel with some “high-sounding nonsense.” We must be able to discern the difference.
