The Importance of Looking Beyond Our Own Interests

Read:Philippians 2:4

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Reflect:

No one has to teach a newborn to look after his or her own interests. When a baby cries someone comforts him. When she cries the baby receives the food she needs. It is easy for the baby to learn that the universe revolves around the baby.

Have you ever thought about what it would be like for an adult to throw a toddler-type tantrum in the check-out line? Most of us no longer cry to have our every desire fulfilled, but selfishness has a way of hanging around, doesn’t it?

Over the last few years, I watched as three grandsons have started to grow up. I remember my own kids and then there is me and my own problem with selfishness, looking after my own interests at the expense of others. Consider this definition –  “devoted to or caring only for oneself – looking out for one’s own interests and benefits regardless of the impact of others.”

Self gets in the way of what God wants to do in our lives. In the brief verse above, Paul encourages us to look beyond ourselves and our own little world.

Respond:

In our relationships,  we may either be selfish ourselves or struggle with someone close to us who demonstrates a me-first mentality. How do you respond to the thought of selfishness in your own life? How can you respond today in Love?
