For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.
1 Corinthians 12: 14-20
Many, many, many years ago I entered a Burger King restaurant with some friends and then proceeded to sing out loud to pretty much embarrassing everyone involved –
“Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce;
Special orders don’t upset us.
All we ask is that you let us serve it your way…
Have it your way, have it your way!”
It was memorable, at least for me, and I think it illustrates the point Paul makes in the verses above. We live in a world where everyone wants to have it their way – and that same sentiment is alive and well in the church.
There are some who are not content with their role in life. Some feel if they are not playing a “visible” role in the local church then they are not important. Not true.
If the body is to be effective, each part has an important function related to the whole body. And what about our internal organs? If everything isn’t working well, then the whole body suffers.
Do you know your role in the body of Christ? Are you content working behind the scenes? Are you putting them to work?
