Fellowship with Light

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life, the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.

1 John 1: 1-4

How many people do you know who are living only for the moment instead of the eternal? People who are focused solely on their career or possessions or health or…. fill in the blank. How many of us regularly make choices that are shortsighted and ignore the best that God has for us? What do you do when life gets a little off track?

When John wrote this first epistle, false teaching had begun to take root in the church. So, his primary theme was to remind the church of the truth of the Gospel, to challenge them to live lives of obedience and sincere devotion to Christ alone. In the passage above, John reminds us of his own eyewitness account of Christ so that we can have fellowship with God and one another.

Fellowship with Christ and one another begins with our relationship with God. Here’s a key verse:

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me”(John 15:4).

We need to remember our Source of strength and live accordingly.
