And we know that the Son of God has come, and he has given us understanding so that we can know the true God. And now we live in fellowship with the true God because we live in fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only true God, and he is eternal life.

1 John 5: 20

I read the following quote from a man (who had quite a following in Christian circles at one time) in response to one of today’s culturally significant conundrums. The topic doesn’t really matter as much as his claim that ” the church will continue to be even more irrelevant when it quotes letters from 2,000 years ago as their best defense.” Agree or disagree? 

Is the church irrelevant? What about letters from 2,000 years ago? It depends on the source of the letters.  If the New Testament is nothing more than a collection of documents then they may have value as historical documents but are of little help to answer life’s biggest questions. But if the claims of those letters are true, that changes everything, wouldn’t you agree?

When John wrote his first epistle, he continually underscored the importance of the Gospel being true. The Son of God did come. He did live. He did die and He is resurrected and alive today. If that statement is true, then Christianity is relevant in every aspect of our lives and the words of the Bible are the inspired words of God.

Here’s a final thought on the matter from C.S. Lewis:

“Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important.”
