All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16,17

As I drove home this evening I thought about all the changes I’ve witnessed in our culture during my lifetime (so far). It wasn’t long ago (seems like five minutes) when all or nearly all people agreed on a certain set of facts, whether we lived up to them or not.

In churches, we agreed that “all Scripture is breathed out by God.” Peter described the process a bit further –

“…No prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”

2 Peter 1:21

And so the Scripture is Inspired and the words of the Bible are intended for our good, both individually and collectively.

God’s word has formed the foundation for most of Western society. Five minutes ago, we generally agreed with the description of mankind found in Genesis. Today, we’re not even sure what is a man or a woman or..

Of course, it wasn’t five minutes ago, I remember some key events that have marked our culture’s path since becoming aware in the mid 70’s and this gradual path into oblivion reminds me of C.S. Lewis’s description of the road to hell –

“Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one–the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts,…Your affectionate uncle, Screwtape.”

C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

But we can be sure that God’s word does provide us with a stable foundation even when the world around us is in chaos. Remember the foundation and stand firm in the true promises of God.
