Another Christmas day has passed and now we look forward to what lies ahead in 2023. Yes, it is a kind of arbitrary practice to ring in the New Year, but we need mileposts in our lives. For some, 2023 will bring a kind of new direction, and others will continue on their current path – either moving toward or further away from their Creator.
The people of Jesus’ day were looking for a savior, a political leader who would deliver them from the oppression of the Romans, but Jesus’ mission was to redeem mankind for everlasting life.
But, when He returns, then He will fulfill completely the prophecy of Isaiah –
For to us a child is born,
Isaiah 9:6-7
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
I don’t know when Christ will return, but like J.C. Ryle, I am certainly looking forward to the day. How about you?
