The Lord makes firm the steps
Psalm 37:23-24
of the one who delights in him;
though he may stumble, he will not fall,
for the Lord upholds him with his hand.
This evening I received a message from an old friend who lost his wife to cancer this week. He is in despair, but this man will recover. I’ve known him for almost thirty-five years and the verses above apply to his life.
Once he started following Christ, he left his old life behind and never looked back. He is a man who delights in the Lord and so we can be sure the same Lord will continue to make “firm the steps” of this man so that when he stumbles (and he likely will face a number of challenges without his loving wife), he will not fall.
Why? Notice the psalmist recognizes that the man’s only contribution is that he is faithful and dedicated to the Lord. It is the Lord who supports his steps and lifts him up when he stumbles.
My friend has modeled what it means to cherish his wife all these years, I am confident he will remain dependent on the Lord. How about us?
