The Great Escape!

Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

1 Corinthians 10:12-13

Over the weekend, Patrina and I watched as a group of people struggled trying to solve the riddles and clues to find their way out of an escape room. It reminded me of when our family took on the challenge of an Escape Room in Cincinnati. I remember that we had an hour to solve the various puzzles and challenges as we moved from room to room. At times we were frustrated, but we knew that one way or another we would be “free.” The question was whether or not we would succeed in our quest. We solved the last riddle and managed to “escape” with a minute or two to spare.

Sometimes, in the face of temptation, that hope isn’t nearly as tangible, is it? But, according to the verses above, there is

  • No temptation that is absolutely unique to you or me
  • No temptation is more than I can handle (with God’s assistance)
  • An escape route is always available!

There are people all around (including some of us) who have believed that we must give in to whatever tempts us. It is just too much to bear.

In some areas, some believe that temptation is only a natural reflection of who I really am and so, how can that possibly be considered as something that is wrong?

We can rationalize almost anything. We can. But, if we believe God’s standards are good and just, then we should be grateful for the encouraging words above.

God is faithful to make sure there is always an escape, so how will we respond?
