Time for reflection

Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.

1 Corinthians 11: 28-29

Yesterday we considered that communion is intended to help us keep Christ central to our lives as Christians. Not only do we look back to His sacrifice or look forward to His return, but we are also to look inside our lives as Paul challenges us to examine our lives.

While church tradition tells us that the first-century church observed the Lord’s Supper weekly, maybe the people in Corinth were just going through the motions. Checking a box. Enjoying a meal without thinking.

Instead, Paul views communion as a time for reflection and when I think of a time of soul-searching I am reminded again of these words:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!”(Psalm 139:23-24).

No matter how often your church observes communion, we should never miss the opportunity to draw closer to our Savior in the process.  Look back. Look forward. Look inside.
