Great, Mighty and Awesome!

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him

1 John 4:9

Yesterday we ended with Tozer’s quote stating that “what comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”

With that in mind, let’s start with the view of God in the minds of those who would describe themselves as “spiritual” but shy away a bit from an exclusive kind of claim.

We have friends who believe a god exists who created and ordered the world and watches over human life on earth and “does not need to be particularly involved in one’s life except when God is needed to resolve a problem.” It is important to note that there is no denial of God – there is a Creator who put things into order, but beyond that, there is an attempt to define God on their own terms.

Instead of a God, who actively sent His Son into the world for our redemption (1 John 4:9 above), the worldview expressed above places limits on God and reduces Him to something less. There is no shortage of books and inspirational teachers who spread a message like the one above. If God’s primary role is to serve me like a genie from a bottle, who is God in this picture, really?

Let’s be reminded that while we may try, it is impossible to put God in a box.

For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God…

Deuteronomy 10:17

Take a minute and reflect on the description here. God is great, mighty, and awesome. What does it mean for us?

The meaning of Awesome includes “something or someone is extremely impressive or inspiring great admiration.” God is Great and Holy and yet He allows us access to talk with Him. The Bible tells us the Creator of all things wants us to see Him clearly – to be awed by His nature and power – and yet He desires to have a relationship with us.

Many of us are facing situations beyond our control. When we have come to the end of ourselves, we can begin to see how we need His mighty arm and hand to work on our behalf. Ask God to expand your capacity to embrace something more of His greatness and stand in genuine awe of God Almighty.
