No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light.
Luke 8:16
Last night we noticed that our guest bedroom seemed a little dark. Apparently, one of the bulbs reached the end of its life and went dark. So, I stood with one foot on a chair and the other resting on the bed as I reached to remove the fixture and replace both bulbs. Notice I didn’t climb under the bed to change the bulbs.
In the verse above, Jesus makes a ridiculous statement in order to make His point. We light our homes so people can see and so it is with the light of our lives. Jesus goes on to explain –
“So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.”
Luke 8:17-18 (NLT)
The light of the Gospel exposes darkness – nothing is truly done in secret and Jesus’ words are intended to shed light on His message and our lives, so we should certainly be paying attention to His teaching and applying it to our lives daily. To do otherwise is to not really listen at all.
