As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
Luke 9:57-58
Over the years, I’ve seen a lot of people make some bold commitments and plans as they stated their intentions to follow Jesus. Some followed through and others maybe spoke before they counted the cost.
In the passage above, the man probably had witnessed some of Jesus’ teaching and miracles. Maybe he was there when Jesus fed the five thousand or witnessed the deliverance of the young boy possess by a demon and then we read his statement – “I will follow you whereever you go.” That’s a bold statement, don’t you think?
I think Jesus’ answer here is intended to cause the man to consider his statement. Most of us like the security of home even when we might daydream about something else, so when Jesus points out that following Him might mean some hardship and uncertainlty, apparently he changed his mind as there is no further mention of him.
Some people want to get on the bandwagon when the going looks smooth, but we all know that life as a Christian isn’t without its dips in the road, right? Still, your best life is found in following Him.
