Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Psalm 19:14
be acceptable in your sight,
O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
The words I say are a reflection of the condition of my heart. I am reminded of Jesus’ words –
And he said, “Are you also still without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.”
Matthew 5:16-20
Notice the list of evil that lurks in our heart? “Evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person.” This is a representative list, not an exhaustive list of the evil that resides in the human heart.
And so, we should echo the words of David in our own lives, seeking to, above all things, be acceptable in the sight of the LORD.
