The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
Psalm 14:1a
Blaise Pascal was a mathematician and scientist who lived during the 1600’s. Pascal was also a follower of Christ who felt that Faith was largely a matter of the heart.
Then as now, many people seek meaning in life, but they also want their deepest desires to be satisfied. At the same time, many people are reluctant to admit their faults.
Pascal’s wager was his attempt to force us to take a hard look in the mirror and ask ourselves the ultimate question regarding the meaning of life – Is there a God?
But Pascal doesn’t stop after the wager. A good look in the mirror reveals us as the hopeless cases we are without Christ. Pascal then tugs at our hearts and declares to us that:
- Only in Jesus can life have meaning.
- Only in Jesus can we find satisfaction and forgiveness.
- Only in Jesus can death, our greatest enemy, be defeated.
Maybe this speaks to you or someone else. Each of us is betting our life on something, aren’t we?
