For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.
Ephesians 5: 8-10
One of the three values expressed by the company I work for is “Responsibility.” meaning that employees are “expected to do the right thing and act responsibly towards colleagues, the environment, and the external community.”
To “do the right thing” there must be a standard that establishes what is right and wrong, light and dark. Paul reminds us that Christ provides the standard and so we must reflect what is “good and right and true” as fruit or results of living in the Light.
This fruit of the light reminds me of Paul’s statement to the Galatians –
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things, there is no law” (Galatians 5: 22-23).
And remember these familiar words from Paul’s epistle to the Philippians –
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Phlippians 4:8-9
In a world that is often confused with what is black and white, good and evil, and right and wrong, let us do two things – remember and live out what is good and right and true.
