“Happy Super Bowl Sunday!” I heard the phrase as I left the local Panera store early on Sunday morning.  It stopped me for a moment.

Ratings services tell us that 111 million people watched the titanic struggle of the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburg Steelers making it the most watched television program of all time.

Over the weekend I heard one pastor refer to the Super Bowl as the biggest holiday in the United States.  Again, it stopped me for a moment. Maybe it is the truth.  Maybe the NFL is more important to most Americans than the God who created them.  Maybe the Super Bowl is bigger than Christmas or Easter or the Fourth of July.

Do I have a problem with the Super Bowl?

Nope. I generally like football and the game was interesting and at least some of the commercials were entertaining, but what does it say about our society that the single most watched event is the closest thing our culture has to the Gladiator games of the Romans? Just thinking.
