Read: Genesis 5:22-24

22 Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters.
23 Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years.
24 Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.

Reflect:

Yesterday I spoke with an older man who mentioned to me that his headstone is ready to be placed at his plot in the cemetery. I don’t know why he felt compelled to tell me, but I did want to ask- “what did you have engraved on the stone?” ( I didn’t)

This man is making his attempt to come to terms with the inevitable. While it is often uncomfortable thought for most of us, our lives on this earth are finite and we should give it some thought, don’t you agree?

Maybe it was because of yesterday’s conversation, but as I read through the opening chapters of Genesis this morning, I came across the description of Enoch’s genealogy.

Twice, Enoch’s life is summed up as a man “who walked with God.” This isn’t about an occasional casual stroll in the park or a man who attended worship services once or twice a week. The phrase speaks to a deep personal relationship between Enoch and God that was cultivated over time.

Enoch is an early example of a life lived with a single-minded purpose and “he was commended as having pleased God” (Hebrews 11:5). If you had the opportunity to sum up your life in a single phrase what would it be?
